NIP Associate Professor Nathaniel Hermosa II is recently awarded by two institutions: the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). DOST recognized Dr. Hermosa with an Outstanding Research and Development Award (Basic Research) giving him the Eduardo A. Quisumbing Medal during the 2017 National Science and Technology Week at the World Trade Center, Pasay City last (11-15 July 2017). NAST also recognized his efforts making him one of the Outstanding Young Scientists (OYS) awardees during the NAST 39th Annual Scientific Meeting last 13 July.

The NAST award reads: “In recognition of his significant contributions to the understanding of fundamental properties of light and light-matter interactions and the development of novel techniques based on light that significantly advanced the state of knowledge of this field in the country. Understanding light and light-matter interaction is an important step in realizing light’s vast potential in the development of applications and technologies especially in effective communication. Dr. Hermosa and his team developed techniques to study believed-to-be inaccessible information from an object or a phenomena by studying the fundamentals of light.”

DOST directs, leads, and coordinates the country’s scientific and technological efforts geared towards maximum economic and social benefits for the Filipino people. On the other hand, NAST, established in 1976, was created to recognize exemplary achievements in the science and technology and to serve as a reservoir of competent scientific and technological manpower for the country. NAST also serves as the advisory body of the Philippine President on policies concerning science and technology in the country.

Dr. Hermosa is active in mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students in the Institute. He is currently the Coordinator of the Photonics Laboratory in the Institute.
