Dr. Ronald Villano Sarmago is a professor at the National Institute of Physics (NIP) of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in the Physics from the University of the Philippines in 1983, his Master’s degree in Physics in 1989, and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of the Philippines and Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan in 1993. He is renowned expert in solid-state electronics and high-temperature superconductors. He has worked as a Professor of Physics at the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines Diliman since 2001. He has also held various positions such as Director of the National Institute of Physics from 2012 to 2019, Coordinator of the Material Science and Engineering Program from 2011 to 2012, and Vice President of the National Research Council of the Philippines – Department of Science and Technology from 2010 to 2011.
He has published numerous papers in international scientific journals and has received several awards and recognition for his work. Some of his notable research includes the development of novel materials and devices such as graphene transfer passivates GaAs, low-energy femtosecond pulsed laser deposition of cerium (IV) oxide thin films on silicon substrates, and terahertz emission from indium oxide films frown on MgO substrates using sub-bandgap photon energy excitation.
He has also served as a reviewer for several international scientific journals and has been involved in various academic organizations such as the Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas (Philippine Physics Society).
