Dr. José Perico Esguerra is professor of physics at the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines Diliman and is currently a principal investigator of the Theoretical Physics Group.
Dr. Esguerra obtained his PhD degree in Physics from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2001. His research interests include celestial mechanics; the statistical mechanics of self-gravitating systems; random walks, Brownian Motion, first passage processes; nonlinear dynamics: fractional calculus and applications, nonlinear oscillations, and the development of approximate analytical solution schemes for quantum and astrophysical systems; and phenomenological consequences of generalized and extended uncertainty principles.
He served as President of the Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas, Philippine representative to the General Council of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, and coach of the Philippine team to the Asian Physics Olympiad, and European Physics Olympiad. He has led the Philippine team to the International Physics Olympiad and served as Faculty Adviser of the University of the Philippines Astronomical Society for more than two decades. Intermittently, he has also been assisting the Philippine teams to the International Olympiad of Astronomy and Astrophysics and the Philippine team to the International Nuclear Science Olympiad. He is currently the examination committee chair of the Philippine Junior Physics Challenge and the Philippine Physics Olympiad, chair of the Philippine National Astronomy Education Coordinator team for the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education.
