In the December 2016 Philippine Journal of Sciences editorial of Prof. Caesar Saloma, he noted that the current Philippine education system is able to produce very low number of new PhD graduates a year in the basic, applied and social sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in comparison to the fields of business and the law. He enumerated and discussed a number of primary factors he thinks to be producing this low national PhD production rate in STEM.
