Fields of Interest: Terahertz Photonics, Semiconductor Physics

Dr. Elmer S. Estacio is a professor of the National Institute of Physics (NIP). He obtained his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. (2004) degrees at the University of the Philippines and had postdoctoral stints at the Institute of Molecular Science, Osaka University, and the University of Fukui. He is concurrently appointed as a visiting researcher at the Advanced Photonics Research Laboratory of Riken in Sendai, Japan.

Dr. Estacio works on semiconductor optoelectronics at the Condensed Matter Physics Laboratory at the NIP. In particular, his research interest is on the terahertz wave radiation in semiconductor materials and photoconductive antenna devices upon optical excitation of ultrafast laser pulses. His group utilize this terahertz time-domain spectroscopy technique to investigate ultrafast optical and carrier transport characteristics in semiconductor materials and devices. In addition, they work on novel antenna substrate design and plasmonic to optimize terahertz generation and detection performance of these devices. Recently, his group has demonstrated successful spintronic terahertz emission mechanism in non MBE-grown Ni/Pt bi-metal layers.
