Dr. Takahiro Matsuoka is a Professorial Research Fellow of the National Institute of Physics (NIP) at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He is also an invited Associate Professor of the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University, Japan.
Dr. Matsuoka obtained his BS and MS in Engineering and Ph.D. in Physics at Osaka University. He became a Postdoctoral Fellow at Osaka University for High-pressure Physics/Chemistry (2008-2009), and he experienced another Postdoctoral position at Japan Synchrotron Radiation Institute / SPring-8 (2009-2011). He became a specially appointed assistant professor at Osaka University (2011-2013), Assistant Professor at Gifu University (2013-2016), and Associate Professor at Gifu University (2016- 2018), Japan. During 2011-2018, he was a collaborative beamline scientist at SPring-8. From 2018 to 2022, he became an invited scientist and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, USA. In 2023, he joined the NIP as a Professorial Fellow.
Dr. Matsuoka works on novel quantum phenomena emerging in extremely compressed materials under high pressures that reach several tens GPa (giga-pascals, 1 GPa = 104 atmospheric pressure) at NIP. His scientific interests include high-temperature superconductivity, novel magnetism, and physical and chemical property tunning of materials using pressure. He designs and constructs high-pressure application devices and related cryostat and heating systems. He also conducts many Lab. and synchrotron- radiation-based X-ray diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy experiments at synchrotron facilities such as SPring-8 (Japan), KEK (Japan), and Advanced Photon Source (USA). He is an awardee of the IOP (International Organization of Physics) Publishing Outstanding Reviewer Award 2022 and holds the IOP Publishing Trusted Referee Status.
